FREUD
"Man is not really such a rational creature as the 18th century rationalist like to think" (Gaarder 426)
This is so true and i believe that its so cool how freu was one of the few persons to contradict many beliefs andeven come up with new ones. He was such an intelligent person that i would also believe everything that he said. And seeing that the human is not logical is such a great achievement.

"infants have some sort of sexuality"(Gaarder 426).
I cant believe that he found out that babies have some kind of sexuality its just so weird and hard to believe i wont ever accept this, because its impossible babies dont even know whatt they are doing let alone experiencing their sexuality.

OUR OWN TIME
"Sophie was not the least surprised when the goose began to speak"(Gaarder 444)
Its so incredible that even after leaving the whole mystery of what was happening with Hilde and Sophie its weird to see that the magical part of the book never ends and i think this is what makes this book always so entertaining.

"According to Nietzche's both Christianity and philosophy had turned away from reality and towards heaven"(Gaarder 449)
As a catholic person i have to agree with the whole heaven perspective but when it comes to me being logical i have to agree taht we are always looking at something un real and basing it on things that are so hard to believe. And it makes them just even more impossible to believe in.

THE GARDEN PARTY
"Sophies World"(Gaarder 466)
its so incredible to believe how this book has changed so much throughout the entire book. I have to agree that its trully a world apart from real life. There is no other book like this book i just finally came to the conclusion that i love it.

"Sophie was sure that he had bought a Barbi doll in a toy store and had made a tailor make it up in her size"(Gaarder 469)
This is one of the funniest comparisons that ive read in the book. The actual way that sophie believes she is dressed is really funny and just makes this book so much more interesting. I just love it when Gaarder places these comparisons in the book.

COUNTERPOINT
"Chateau Neuf which mean something "The new palace"(Gaarder 481)
I love it when in the books there is something new that they put and they explain it. The use of different languages in the book just is something that i really love and makes this book so much more worldly and beautiful.

"She's so lucky to be real person. Now she'll grow up and be a real woman." (Gaarder 496)
Its so sad to see thaat she finally comes to the conclusion that shes not a real person but its at the same time something so sad to think about becuase well i dont know, she's not a real person and its just sad.

THE BIG BANG
"History repeats itself eternally. In india, for example, there is and ancient theory that the world continually unfolds and folds again"(Gaarder 502)
I think that this super true what they say in India becuase there is no other explanation as to why the world functions in a certain way and why we do soo. But the explanation that history repeats itself is the most intelliggent as there have already been examples of this happening and re occuring and i just think that its super true.

The Enlightment

"Hilde was just beggining to understand the system of the dates"(Gaarder 300)
I think that the entire present that Hildes father gave her is so special i wish i would get such a detailed present it really shows how important she is to him. I still find it hard to believe that this is a book inside a book but its so interesting now that i finally understand it.

"Are we really human beings of flesh and blood"(Gaarder 301)
This whole chapter has made me realize that what if we were all living ina huge dream no one would ever really know; what if we were all a part of a story that we had no idea. I just think its really interesting the way in which the book involves two books inside of one.

Berkeeley

"The only things that exsist are the ones that we perceive"(Gaarder 279)
this is so right, i really believe that we make our own worlds and that everything that we think exsist are what we perceive not what really exists/this also makes me believe that there are so many different perceptions of different things that each and everyone of us has a different world of our own.

Bjerkely:
"Friday June 15, 1990"(Gaarder 281)
Although this may not be the most important quote of the entire book, i feel it has a great significance to the entire novel there is so much that can come out of this day. Since they are always talking about this birthday and how sophie and Hilde share it, i believe this is trully significant.

"The Garden of Eden"(Gaarder 287)
This is so confusing once again i cant understand it but what i do get is that this is just like a book inside a book after all the confusion about the double personality that i thought was going on i finally understood everything andd why everything was so magical because it is all made up, it doesnt actually exsist. so weirdddddd!!!!

Hume

"More than any philosopher, he took the everyday world as his starting point."(Gaarder 264)
Hume is one of the few philosophers i can actually relate too, its so interesting how he just like me believe in the importance of the experience of the newborns. its so interesting to me because ive had through my entire life those same experiences.

"In other words it is a false idea which must be rejected"(Gaarder 265)
Its so interesting to see this idea that Hume had since he makes everything very close mindedly, there is no space for creativity and imagination in his philosophy of life and i just think that through the example they give about the angels i disagree with the fact that the idea must be rejected because they are "non exsisting"

Locke

"Well now i insist on meeting him. Tomorrow at the latest. Its not natural for a young girl to be meeting an older man like this" (Gaarder 253)
Its so true and this has been my question throughout the entire book because i cant ever seem to reach to a conclusion as to why this is always so normal to Sophie. To be meeting a guy who at first she had no idea, and then someone so old. Its so weird for me because she never seems to be even the slightest bit of c=scared.

"When I saw him sometime in the seventies he wasnt a day younger than this Alberto I just saw"(Gaarder 255)
I never understand anything of this mysterious book. Its all so confusing to me since i cant ever understand the actual situation that Sophie is in. And what her mother just said about Alberto just makes me second guess everything and get even more confused about everything that is happening. Since he hasnt changed over 15 years and he is just the same. then something weird must be happening.

Spinoza

"Few philosophers in more recent times have been so blasphemed and so persecuteed for their ideas as this man."(Gaarder 244)
Well its really interesting to see how the world has evolved just as spinoza many other people throughout history have been persecuted and its really sad to think that people could not say what was on their mind because of fear, I just think that maybe since persecution towards "different" people would have been smaller than who knows what kind of things people would say and teach.

descartes

"he was convinved that certain knowledge is only attainable through reason"(Gaarder 230)
i think that Descartes point here in the quote that knowledge is attained through reason is really logical and i think that it is really true also, since the only way we can trully understand something is through the application of reason in everything we do so i think descartes has an incredible point here.

"Are you angry Sophie? So may exclamation marks are a sign of violent feelings"(Gaarder 241)
this is really interesting to see. I think that this question that Alberto does to Sophie is so ridiculous since the entire story and there entire relationship is built on cards and misteriousness and finding the true identities of Hilde and her father. So Alberto asking this just seems really dumb.

Descartes:

The Baroque:
"The dog's name is Hermes"(Gaarder 215)
its so interesting to see how in the entire book they make a philosophical connection to everything and everyone no matter what. Since the name Hermes is actually someone important and relevant. This is one of the main reasons why i think this book is so not interesting, it just seems as if we were reading a textbook.

"She was doing better in some subjects since she started on the philosophy course"(Gaarder 217)
well i dont know what this quote is trying to explain to me but it seems as though it were telling me that i should learn or take a course in philosophy to become a better person even in my grades. I hate this book and i hate philosophy so this just made me think that this may be the reason why i have such bad grades in every single class.

domingo, 2 de octubre de 2011

"Precisely, for example it was thought that fossils were imprints of animals that had failed to get into the ark"(Gaarder 405)
Its incredible to think how our world has developed so much and too see how much we have advanced in every subject of our lives especially knowledge its incredible to see how this quote says that at first they thought that and now we know completely the truth, i find this incredibly entertaining.

"You cannot distinguish a human embryo from a rabbit embryo until a very late stage"(Gaarder 407)
this is something that i have always felt is so strnange and it makes me really question where we come from and i really thinks its the same as what they say after if we are distinct relatives. Its really surprising to actually know how we are just like other mammals in the world

Marx

"It was asthough she was getting inspiration from some guiding spirit" (Gaarder 383)
Its so weird to see how there is always such a touch of magic thrown in everything from the book and its also very weird becuase i know that there is like a spirit or Hildes father that is hhelping her through all of this. I still wont ever understand how this could trully ever happen but it really makes thebook interesting.

"You know a way out of the mental captivity that we have lived in for too much."(Gaarder 384)
Once again it freaks me out this mental captivity or extra weird force that their is over Sophie. It really scares me the way that their is so much power over this girl and i really dont like it at all. But i still never understand who is the person behind all this power on sophie. Its all really confusing to me

Kierkegaard

"My name is Alice"(Gaarder 370)
So i have a strange idea or concept or i dont really know if i trully understand the hidden message behind this little girl with a blue dress. I dont understand whether she has to look like ALice in Wonderland or if shes the legit Alice in Wonderland. I had no idea of the connection but yet is so interesting to see her part in the story.

"This juice tasted fresher and sharper than the other. Again everything around her changed suddenly"(Gaarder 371)
This book just keeps getting weirder by the second I hvae no idea what this juice is but its probably some alchoholic beverage or some drug . But its so weird to see her reaction towards this juice obviously there a purpose for the drink but im really scared for Sophie, i feel as though someone was going to rape her after drinking that.

Hegel

"She had asked her to rebel against her father"(Gaarder 356)
This is really something to think about it really makes me scared about everything that could happen since her father is so powerfull. I must say that i was expecting sophie to say somehting to her like that since ive noticed that Sophie is really careless and she has absolutely no fears whatsoever.

"The attempt to set up eternal criteria for what man can know about the world"(Gaarder 358)
Ive actually noticed that this is true whatever this quote says is really true becuase ive noticed that overall throughout the entire philosophical class that we have been given in this book. The main idea and purpose was to see what people can know about the world and they just question everything their is to it. I find it quite interesting.

romanticism

"That makes us only shadows of shadows"(Gaarder 354)
this quote really caught my mind because i find it so hard to believe that they could actually be only shadows of shadows. Its really weird i dont really even understand what this means and i have no idea why they even say it but it really caught my eye.

"Were you dreaming"(Gaarder 352)
This book is so weird and hard to grasp that this quote really defines the confusion that they try to make. By saying were you dreaming it just makes me second guess everything and i cant take it seriously everything, this book is to confusing.

KANT

"Kant was the first of the philosophers we have heard about so far to have taught philosophy at an university" (Gaarder 320)
Its so weird to think that none of the previous philosophers have been actual teaches although they have strong ideas and virtues and maybe some have some classses somewhere. It seemed weird and this caught my attention that only kant has been giving college classes.

"There are two kinds of philosophers"(Gaarder 320)
It had always been in my mind that there was only one kind of philosopher, although i had a difficult time deffining what a philosopher was. I really like that in this part they help us differentiate them and its just great how the idea of this book really works since their is a story that feel like a philosophy textbook.

The enlightment

"she jumped at every new card and birthday greeting"(Gaarder 300)
its so weird to finally see the reaction that we have been waiting for since the beggining of the book and it kinda makes me really happy to see that hilde is so excited because of the cards that her father sent her, i still dont understand why the cards were directed to sophie.

"Does our world consist of real things, or are we encircled by the mind"(Gaarder 301)
Ive always had this question in my mind whethere we are really trully human being or what are we really. Ive always thought that we are of pure imagination and that we are just living in a dream. This is so freaky because its just what i have alwys thought of.

The Revelation

As I was on my way home my mind was going crazy having talked with Alberto about Hilde’s father and his extreme power this was making me second guess why I had ever answered or kept learning about philosophy from Alberto from the beginning. Everything was so strange finding exactly the ten crowns right when I needed them and then seeing that they belonged to Hilde was daunting. And even more frightening was the fact that all these people knew so much about me but yet I had no clue about them. Asking Alberto if I was Hilde and seeing his reaction truly made me think about the possibility of me actually being Hilde. But everything was too mysterious for me to know the answer right away. But I was sure enough going to do whatever it would take to find out, why out of everyone in the world I had been chosen for this course and who these people that knew so much about me were. I had learned that the female god was Sophia just like me and all these people like the teacher Alberto were in such a scary way related to my life. But this was obviously just a weird coincidence and I had much better things to do like help my mother out with the party she was throwing for my birthday. So I called my mom and asked her what I could do and she simply replied food, so I guessed that meant I had to go to the groceries and buy stuff I grabbed the groceries list on top of the dining table grabbed some cash and went running outside so I could come back home quickly and see if Alberto would send me another package. Mysteriously there was a bike in my front door I thought to myself if this could be another “gift” from Hilde’s father, so I grabbed on to it and quickly headed for the store. Suddenly on the first left turn a hard object hit me in the face. Then I saw girl just like me she turned around and it was me! But somewhere in the distance they were saying Hilde, Hilde. That’s when suddenly I realized who Hilde was and the reason why all the cards were directed to me always. It was me Hilde was me or I was Hilde, everything made sense to me now I finally understood why these people knew me so well and why all of the sudden I kept finding things that were “lost”. But why had I not known if it had always been me. Suddenly my head started to hurt and to my surprise all this time I had hit myself so hard on the head that I had fainted. But when I looked at my hands I noticed something different it wasn’t my exact color of skin, I went running to the nearest bathroom. I couldn’t believe it I was actually somebody else I must have been crazy. I grabbed the bike and headed to the majors cabin I had to find Alberto no matter where. Once I arrived he was obviously not there; I couldn’t possibly head back home looking like this. And as I was starting to panic another package hit me in the face. It was a card from Alberto he said “Dear Sophie after all this time asking yourself who you were, it was about time that you found out who you truly were, all this time you looked at the mirror and saw a girl, this girl never really existed. But now that you’ve finally understood where you came from it was essential you knew who you truly were, good luck in life Hilde your father Albert or as you may know me Alberto”. So all this time I wasn’t actually searching for a person, I was searching for the real me.

The Renaissance

"Sophie sat down on the edge of the bed. She had absolutely no doubt that it was Hilde she had seen in the mirror" (Gaarder 187)
AAAHHHHHH!!! this really caught my attention i freaked out. I think this book is trying to mess with my mind because its so scary yet so philosophical. I am scared i dont want to keep reading this book becuase im getting even more scared and i cant see the mirror in my room anymore after reading this book and its so weird to think that sophie actually thinks that hilde was the girl that she saw in the mirror i dont know what to keep thinking i just want to cry and keep reading.

"Sophie looked at the clock. She had been asleep for two hours"(Gaarder 188)
I dont know wwhat to think about the actions that are occuring in the life of Sophie. I dont know whether to believe or not that what she has learned about Alberto is true, i dont know if this was only just a dream or if she turning crazy or maybe the actual reason could be that Sophie is doing drugs and she is hallucinating allot of things. I LOOOOOVE THIS BOOK!!

The Middle Ages

"You said the church closed Plato's academy in Athens" (Gaarder 170)
i do believe in god and i go to church but this just made me realize that its so frustrating how the church closed platos academy because of his different ideas i think that people should have the chance to atleast say whats on their mind or atleast be able to perform other things that arent "accepted in society"/

"We must meet in person its beggining to be urgent, you see"(Gaarder 164)
I dont know how i feel about them meeting i actually think that ALberto is a very old man who has nothing better to do with his life, and i think that he wants to rape sophie or something harmfull i have no idea but im freaking out for sophie.

two cultures

"It wont be long now before we meet, my deaar Sophie" (Gaarder 147)
this book is getting to be to good to be true i thought that sophie and alberto where never going to meet and that made me very sad but now that i know that sophie will meet both alberto and Hilde im finally second guessing whether or not i should really finish reading this book. :(

"Indo-europeans have therefore often tried to "predict" how the battle between Good and Evil will turn out"(Gaarder 149)
it hasnt got a huge importance to the beeok; this quote. However i trully feel that its so weird how through time we have come to realize that such things like superstition dont and wont ever exsits, it makes me sort of laugh when i learn something about ancient cultures and most of their beliefs.

The Postcards

"P.s. someday you will meet a girl called Sophie" (Gaarder 143)
its so weird to finally know that both girls know each other and that their was always a purpose in the completion of these cards not only does this make me want to read the book quicker i finally know that someday they will finally meet and make this book complete.

Hellenism

"Even if everybody doesnt feel guilty about showing themselves naked most people will have a bad conscience if they are really mean to someone"(Gaarder 124)
Humans are so weird to me, when at first i saw this quote it really caught my attention since its true not everyone cares whether or not they are seen naked, but its so different when these feelings of regret are about something like hurting feelings. this quote is really true it demonstrates how we as humans react to various scenarios.

"By accepting the teachings and performing certain rituals, a believer could hope for the immortaluty of the soul and eternal life"(Gaarder 127)
I have no idea why this caught my attention, i think its a really philosophical way of thinking. It hard for me to understand but from what i can grasp it trully means that a believer is someone unlike other people he is from another branch of life but yet he is so powerfull in what he can come to belive.

Aristotle

"But the idea horse was simply a concept that we humans had formed after seeing a certain number of horses" (Gaarder, 107)
Its so weird for me to grasp the idea that we humans came up with something so strange as language and then how everything evovled into what we came to believe since we had seen things so many times. Horses are just humans reaction to something that we have grown so accoustmed too. Its really interesting.

"A chicken's egg has the potentiality to become a chicken. This does not mean all chicken's eggs become a chicken" (Gaarder 109)
this example of how everything changes so much since not all chickens become chicken its so weird since us as humans have become the most supreme creatures in the world and have the power to un-naturally select important things as deciding whether or not we should let a chicken be a chicken or create that egg into huevos rancheros. i had no idea how powerfull we trully are.

The majors cabin

"But all of the sudden something scarry happened. Just once in the space of a split second. Sophie saw quite cleary that the girl in the mirror winked with both eyes"(Gaarder 96)
this part of the book has been the most scarriest part of the book and it made me think that she might be crazy or that she is an alien or another person, or the devil might have possesed her i dont know what this could have been but its so weird to think that her shadow or the person might be a ghost i dont know it really scared me allot.

"are we born with innate "ideas""(Gaarder 97)
are we born with innate ideas i think that we are born with innate abilitties like that of being more athletically developed but i dont think that our ideas are already innate i think it is all due to the background in which we are raised in and its so difficult to think that someone was born with those ideas already.

continuation of plato

"That which is eternal and immutable, to plato is therefore not a "basic substance"(Gaarder 84)
so what i think plato was trying to say here is that we dont all come from one basic substance. This is more acceptable to think of since believeing that we come from one substance was really impossible tbecause that one substance had to come frm somewhere.

plato

"Does man have an immortal soul"(Gaarder 81)
well do we really have an immortal soul i think that this is not true how can a person actually be immortal what does it really mean, well this quote just made me realize how weird we human beings are and why we do different things it jsut really strange to me everything

Athens

"And finally you must say whether men and women are equally sensible"(Gaarder 78)
Well this just made me think about whether or not women and men are equally sensible and although i read in psychology that women have more hormones and that men disguise most of their feeling due to society. I still have to agree that women and men are equally sensible.

socrates

"We dont learn anything there. The difference between school teachers and philosophers is that schoolteachers think they know a lot of stuff that they try to force down our throats."(Gaarder 71)
this just really makes sense if found out that philosophy compared to other subjects trully has a meaning and can be figured out unlike the other subjects in which they just tell us that there is no right answer until proven. I just think that philosophy can be understood and i like it allot.

"The word Sophist means a wise and informed person"(Gaarder 64)
well finally i can understand why the book is called Sophies world obviously its about the world of a knowledgeable person that is learning everything about philosophy, finall i understand the hidden message in the title.

FATE

"When sickness occurs, it is a sign that nature has gone off course becuase of physical or mental imbalance." (gaarder 56)
it just really hit me the fact that it is so true since all sickness are a product of imbalance somewhere so just knowing how sicknesses are produced is just soemthing intereseting that caught my atterntion. Since this is so true.

democritus

"White envelopes dont appear just out of thin air" (gaarder 43)
this just makes me think more and more about who the person who sends these letters to sophie trully is i think he is a man but i am scared also becuase i feel that sophie is being constantly harrased and even brain washed by this envelope sender. :S

The Natural philosophers

"all life originated from water" (gaarder 34)
interesting quote caught my attention because as previously mentioned its weird to think that we must have come from something wheter it was a supreme god or from simple water, really made me think.

"The only way we can accept the transformations we can see with our own eyes" (gaarder 42)
i have to agree with this quote because its so hard for me to believe in the different philosophies or different religions if i cant ssee them with my two eyes.

the myths

"Once loki saves the situation by explaining that the bride has not slept for a week because she is so excited about the wedding" (gaarder 27)
i find this quote to be really interesting how people would come up with myths about everything. its so weird to think that even way back in time poeple were in the search for answers about where we came from and who we are and why the world acts a certain way.

the top hat

"sadly its not only the force of gravity we get used the world itself becomes a habit"(gaarder 19)
its so weird to think that the world is so big and full of colors that we become so use to everything even rainbows which are so weird but were used to everything and nothing seems new. We dont realize how many things we are presented too in earth.

"perhaps you think the world is so normal"(gaarder 21)
we are so used to the world that we see nothing new this made me realize how much everything really counts and how we just think that its normal the way a baby grows in a womb or different things that are so marvelous, we all take them for granted.

the garden of eden

"Who are You? "(gaarder 8)
this question really makes me think about who we really are internally let alone being human beings. It made me wonder what type of person i was and why.

"At some point something might have come from nothing."(gaarder 9)
this realy makes me double think what that one thing that everything came froom was. whether it was a person or a substance or even something like sand. I dont know it just makes you think what one thing was so powerfull to create everything else.
